Key Duties

Professional
- To act in accordance with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct for Nurses, Midwives and Health Visitors.
- To be aware of, and work within, the Trust policies, with particular attention to Clinical Governance issues, and to attend the Trusts mandatory training/update sessions.
- To be aware of, and comply with, the Data Protection Act, Caldicott requirements and the Health & Safety at Work Act.
- To participate pro-actively in your professional development reviews, the Trusts Cancer Nurses/AHP Team meetings and departmental Clinical Supervision.
- To continually assess your own educational needs in relation to the clinical nurse specialist role, identifying and utilising appropriate resources.
- To carry out such duties as may be required and are consistent with the responsibilities of the grade, providing and enabling the highest standard of care.

Clinical
- You will be continually available during working hours via your bleep/telephone to patients, carers and medical staff; this can mean you may be interrupted at unpredictable intervals when an immediate need for your intervention occurs.
- To act as a specialist key worker for those with malignant gynaecological disease from diagnosis; acting as patient/carer advocate particularly in context of MDT meetings; assisting patients/carers in making informed decisions by conveying highly complex information regarding current treatment options in an understandable format; thus enabling them to become partners in care.
- To attend and participate in weekly Gynae Oncology multi-disciplinary team meeting and West Midlands Expert Advisory Group meetings.
- To communicate effectively with patients/families/carers over a range of highly sensitive/emotional issues including endorsing bad news; identifying/responding to unpredictable psychological/physical/social needs of this patient group; providing guidance/support/information/education/counselling; initiating referral on to other agencies if appropriate.
- To remain point of contact for patients/carers post-treatment into extended follow-up period/patient initiated follow up whether face-to-face or via telephone assessing/analyzing clinical/disease recurrence concerns taking responsibility for urgent onward referral or appropriate reassurance.
- Provide mainstream genetic counselling for patients with ovarian/fallopian tube/primary peritoneal cancer.
- Provide a mainstream counselling service for Lynch syndrome.
- Promote self-management undertaking risk stratification determining those who can self-manage following education/those who will need guided support/self-manage/those requiring ongoing face-to-face support.
- Provide a telephone Patient Centred Follow up Clinic (PCFU) for low-risk patients that do not require standard follow-up.
-Provide a telephone helpline for PCFU patients experiencing new red flag symptoms.
-To communicate effectively with other Outpatient departments across Trust/the Oncology multi-disciplinary teams/Chemotherapy Service/Cancer Centre/primary healthcare providers/Social Services/local hospices/relevant voluntary agencies ensuring continuity/equity of patient care.
-To offer an individualised service respecting diverse cultural backgrounds identifying spiritual needs of patient/family/carers enabling involvement from appropriate religious/pastoral care professionals.

Leadership
-Lead a small team of Clinical Nurse Specialists/Cancer Pathway Navigator providing specialist nursing advice/support for patients/family/carers helping them negotiate their journey through care.
-He/she will support/develop CNS team providing expertise through training/advice/guidance acting as role model.
-He/she will manage roster/appraisals/job planning/sickness absence/objective setting/personal development plans for team members.
-To demonstrate expert knowledge/high standards clinical practice healthcare professionals both within Trust/external settings
-To take full responsibility own workload/manage caseload efficiently/effectively maintaining flexibility meet demands service requirements
-To identify/maintain supportive networks self/relevant staff/team members
-To be fully aware targets set NHS Cancer Plan/Cancer Reform Strategy/Improving Outcomes Guidance/trust corporate/directorate objectives using available resources meet these targets alongside multi-professional teams
-To develop interface primary care/local cancer units challenging existing boundaries working partnership
-To provide expert nursing advice/influence local Cancer Networks attending relevant specialist nursing groups/Tumour Working Groups
-To take active role local/network/national specialist nursing groups.

Education and Development
-To educate patients/their families at appropriate level regarding their cancer/treatment plan associated side-effects enabling safe self-care receiving outpatient/daycare treatment
-To provide support education/training other healthcare professionals developing skills deliver appropriate specialist care cancer
-To present research/audit/service development projects represent trust formal education forums/conferences
-To contribute development resource teaching packs use by both staff/patients clinical educational settings
-To assess own educational needs/take steps keep updated clinical/nursing developments line Nursing Midwifery Council requirements
-To formulate personal development plan undergo regular appraisals Matron
-Undertake necessary training provide advance skills specialized nursing cancer
-Utilize research findings develop strategies/protocols/guidelines delivery specialized nursing services disseminating relevant information staff
Identify areas specialized practice needing research advising Divisional Clinical Nurse Manager
Undertake possible nursing research study publish outcomes
Inform Advanced Practice/Specialist Nurses Divisional Clinical Nurse Manager implications any ongoing/upcoming studies advising on resource implications
Liaise Clinical Trial Nurses participating being aware trials involving specific protocols/treatment plans.

Strategy & Service
