Post-holder Responsibility
To promote and help to manage delivery of a quality nursing service, setting and monitoring clinical standards.
To be responsible for the assessment of patient care needs, the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care.
To work as a Team Leader and Deputise for the Ward Sister/Charge Nurse within the framework of team nursing based on internal night rotation and in accordance with the nursing philosophy of Ashford and St Peter's Hospitals NHS Trust.
To take lead responsibility for co-ordinating and facilitating the training, educational and development needs of staff.
To take lead responsibility for an area of clinical practice appropriate to the ward environment.
Internally, the post holder will develop effective working relationships with:
- Willow Ward Manager
- Clinical Nurse Leader
- CSNP team
- Discharge Team
- Social Services
- Emergency Department
Externally this includes:
- Mental Health Institution
- Other NHS and private organisations
The post holder will work closely with the Ward Manager & their Band 6 Sister / Charge Nurse Colleagues. They will work in close conjunction with:
- The ward doctor
- Matron
- Senior ward team
- Practice Educator
- Therapists
- Learning & Development Teams
The post holder will act as a role model and resource, providing information and promoting high standards of patient care while working closely with other professionals in the wider Multidisciplinary team. The Sister / Charge nurse role complements the Ward Manager role by providing leadership and support to deliver patient care while monitoring acceptable standards in conjunction with the multi-disciplinary team.
The post holder will assist the ward manager in supporting key priorities which include finance and risk.

Clinical & Professional Responsibilities
SupporttheWardManagerinleadingandsupervisinga safe ,highstandardofnursingpracticeandthedeliveryofevidencedbasedpatientcareinaccordancewiththeCodeofProfessionalConduct,theTrustsStrategyforNursingandTrust/UnitPoliciesandProcedures.
Assistinprovidingandevelopinggoodnursingpracticeensuringthatsaidpracticesareinaccordancewithdepartmentandhospitalpolicy.
Assistintheestablishment ,monitoringandevaluationofagreedstandardsofpatientcareandqualityservice.
Determine nursing care priorities ,planningthedeliveryofpatientcaretakingintoaccounttheskillmixofstaff.
Interpretthesignificanceofthepatientsclinicalobservationsandrecords,makingdecisionsandplanninginareasaffectingpatientcare;reportspromptlytomedicalorappropriatestaffanymatterswhichfalloutsidehis/herresponsibility.
Investigateandreports onallaspectsof patientmanagement,inclusiveaccidentsandcomplaints,inlinewithhospitalpolicy.
Monitorclericalandlegaldocumentscompletedbywardstaff ensuringtheyareaccurateandlegible.
Establishaneffectivecommunicationsystemwithpatients,theircarers,andallstaffworkinginthemultidisciplinaryteam.
Assistwithanyappropriateevaluationprojectsandinassessmentofnewequipmentandtechnology.
Assistwiththeclinicalandhousekeepingpracticecompliancewithpolicyprocedures topreventhospitalacquiredinfection.
Management Responsibilities
InconjunctionwiththeWardManagerisresponsibleforeffectiveorganisationoftheward/department.Beawareofandagreetoadhere totheShiftLeaderResponsibilitiesaspertheTrustsStandardsforPracticeCare.Ensurethesafecustodyadministrationofdrugeachaccordingtoestablishedprocedurelaw.Ensure safeuseequipmentascertainingthatstaffarecompetenttooperate equipmentthatisequippedinsafeworkingorder.KeepatraininglogcomplyingWithTrustCNSTrequirements detailingstafftrainersandequipmentindividualstaffhavebeentrainedinandcompetent touse.UnderstandimplicationsoftheHealthSafetyatWorkActmaintainSafeenvironmentforpatients visitors staffaccordingtoHospitalsHealthSafetyPolicy.ReportrecordaccidentsincidentscomplaintstoWardSisterChargeNurse accordingtotrust policyundertake furtherinvestigationsdirected.Becompetentincurrentemergencyresuscitationtechniquesbothintheatrypractic.Haveworkingknowledgeoffireregulations procedures ensuringappropriateactiontakenresponseemergency.InconjunctionWardManagermantainbudgetarycontrolthroughanefficienteffectiveuse resources.Attendmeetingsparticipateworkingpartieswhenrequireddevelopeffectivelinkscolleaguesobtaininggivinginformation.Undertakeprojectsinitiateimprovementsnursingcaremanagementward department.Deputiseforthewarmanagerintheirabsence.
