At Northampton General Hospital NHS Trust, we pride ourselves on being at the forefront of patient care, and since 2016, we've led the way by placing dedicated ward pharmacists in our Emergency Department. In 2021, we expanded this approach to our Admissions Unit. Our highly skilled team includes medicines management technicians, assistants, and specialist pharmacists (Bands 6, 7, and 8) with expertise in emergency care, diabetes, and respiratory medicine.
As a forward-thinking department, we are constantly evolving driven by a passion for improving services, enhancing safety, and delivering the best possible care. Our Emergency Care Team showcased their impactful work at the Clinical Congress 2024 and were incredibly proud of our Advanced Pharmacist who won the poster competition at the UKCPA Conference 2023 for her work on VTE assessments in admissions.

Main Responsibilities:
Clinical Services
- To provide information, advice and guidance on the safe, effective and economical use of medicines and to challenge poor practice.
- To maintain appropriate standards of service and safety; to enforce guidelines, policies and procedures to ensure standards are met.
- To fulfil the requirements of the Code of Ethics and Standards of Good Professional Practice.
- To optimise medicines management by reconciling drug histories performing medication reviews using patients' own medicines counselling ensuring continuity of care on discharge.
- To detect record report adverse drug reactions to Medicines Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) via Datix as per Trust Policy.
- To monitor pharmacy interventions Datix reports identify training information needs within Urgent Care.
- To participate in CQUINs QIPPs within Urgent Care.
- To identify implement service improvements within Urgent Care.
- To lead support auditing medicines prescribing within Urgent Care.
- To implement countywide local prescribing strategies within Trust.
Advanced Clinical Pharmacy Role
- To lead develop practice guidelines protocols within Emergency Department how these relate national other guidance.
- Optimise medicines through prescribing role operating areas competence (where appropriately qualified authorised via Trust NMP register).
- Prescribe safely interests patients line formulary policy procedures guidance.
- Provide specialist clinical pharmacy service Emergency Department urgent care wards.
- Provide Enquiry Answering Service for urgent care-related enquiries from other pharmacists referred from other wards.
Education Training Supervision
- Line manage staff including objective setting appraisal.
- Act role model pharmacy team including supporting junior pharmacist achieve objectives.
- Attend clinical pharmacy meetings education/training schemes relevant post.
