Description

Responsibilities:

- Assist the Pharmacy Team in the development and delivery of a medicines management service to HMP Bedford using the in-house electronic prescribing system.
- Deliver a safe and effective medicines management process.
- Act as an Accredited Checking Technician and Medicine Management Technician, when required.
- Work within the operational pharmacy team and represent pharmacy when requested/required.
- Assist in the delivery of a high-quality dispensing service to HMP Bedford, ensuring medicines are dispensed to agreed standards, calculating doses and quantities for supply. Including the supply of medicines in Monitored Dosage Systems.
- Ensure that pharmacy technical operations (ordering, handling, storage and disposal of medicines) are undertaken in a safe, secure and efficient manner that complies with medicines legislation and good practice.
- Liaise with other members of the healthcare team (including doctors, consultants and nurses), providing medicines related guidance to reduce medicines errors.
- Provide medication on an individual patient basis, effectively delivering complex information and advice to prescribers, patients and carers where necessary.
- Support healthcare staff to ensure prescribing and administration of medicines takes place in accordance with local policy.
- Ensure patient related records are kept up to date.

Audits:

- Undertake audits of medicines use and management processes regularly; provide feedback to the Specialist Pharmacist for Prison Health as required.
- Contribute to multidisciplinary audits within defined clinical areas; make recommendations based on audit findings for submission to the Clinical Governance & Audit Group.

Service Development:

Participate in service development initiatives aimed at maintaining or improving quality care provided to patients.

Policy Input:

Provide input into policy procedures affecting pharmaceutical use at HMP Bedford and other CNWL Foundation Trust sites.
